Further down, Matt says "You’re basically saying we cannot do soft forks at all". I fully agree with that. Super is still right to call out BIP16, but it was done before good standards for soft forks existed. The point to make is: let's not do it like that again. Just like satoshi's removal of OP_CAT... we should be careful to not repeat that and call it out if it is proposed in the present.
Can't change the past short of rewriting history.
