Neon lights come in many colours because different coloured fluorescent tubes are used. These light tubes are filled with noble gases (helium, neon, argon, krypton, xenon and radon), which are so named because they don’t react with other elements to form compounds.
  • Noble gases are also used to light up runways and harbours to counteract foggy and hazy nights.
  • Neon gives out red light.
  • Krypton gives out blue light.
  • Helium gives out yellow light.
  • Xenon gives out white light:
  • Argon gives out blue light.
  • Coating a layer of phosphor on a neon light tube will produce a pink light.
  • A combination of mercury with argon will give out a green light.
