wonder if it is really that lucrative
Yesterday I got paid ~57k sats from territory boosts for 1 of 2 posts of this scam (30k) and my downzap+boost (27k) portion of rewards, and note, the latter on a day that I wasn't even active. My territory was not part of the second scam post, so my income from this was lower than for the others that were included on both You can see the magnitude of payouts to territories
That's more than a month of territory rent, in one day, scam income.
I would rather have a scam be visible
Discoverable as the top post tho? What if there are 10 scams? Should they be the top 10 posts on SN? What if there are 100 scams? What if there are 20,000 scams?
have the same visibility
Just wait until your comments get downzapped by the same scammer.

Fair point.
Hence why I asked a while back if a "no boost" category would be possible to add.
If it really got that bad (however many to crowd out signal), I might be motivated to attempt to write such a filter myself.

Oh.. then you just log into your sockpuppet and zap from there.
(boosts are actually less damaging to algo than sockpuppet zaps)

Yikes. Of course.
I suppose if it got to that point where it's profitable enough for scammers to spend that much and to jump the additional hoops, then this community is doomed anyway.
I don't think I'd be able to find enough signal to want to stick around if I was surrounded by people falling for constant scams frequently enough to make them viable.
(I also suspect sockpuppeterized zapping could get automated quite cheaply too. So likely not even enough friction to call it a hoop to jump with a straight face.)
FWIW, I have a clientside filter and I use it to:
- only see a slop post once, downzap it once with a normal amount,
- be able to forgivingly downzap stackers with poor but non-harmful ideas (i.e. the Stockholm-syndrome fiat maxis) with a very minimal amount of sats so that I don't have to be annoyed, yet non-obtrusively let everyone have their own fantasy
- completely hide content from stackers and territories that just anger me, so that I don't fight all the time
... and move on. I turn this off for scam posts, because scammers are predators.
If we don't stand up to predators and let them roam among us freely, then we, stackers, are not a community, or at least not a welcoming one. The scammer is then just a wolf among wolves of a different tribe and any sheep dumb enough to walk into our territory will be ravaged. By them or by us. Either way. This is a possible outcome, and possibly the outcome stackers want. I hope that stackers can be honest about their hunger (for sats) then though. None of this high horse shit. Just be a fucking predator but be a man about it and show them pathetic little teeth.
I don't really care as long as both supportive and critical comments can have the same visibility by leaning on the same mechanism.
At some point, we have to allow for critical thinking.
I would rather have a scam be visible and called out as one than it being suppressed.
You make it sound as if territory owners are swimming in sats. Which makes me, as a lowly unlanded pleb, wonder if it is really that lucrative that it'd be considered a serious sacrifice to forego those sweet, sweet sats?
