Stacker News Is Dead. Long Live Stacker News.
“We’ve added an optional and embedded Spark wallet.”
That announcement from @k00b: #1556366, may look like just another product update. But I think it represents something much bigger.
For me, Stacker News was special because it was Bitcoin in action via LN.
You didn't just read about Bitcoin. You earned sats. You spent sats. You zapped people. You interacted with a community where Lightning was the money layer powering the social layer.
That was the magic.
And now we have Spark.
Spark calls itself a Bitcoin Layer 2. I don't buy that framing. As I see it, Lightning is the real Bitcoin Layer 2 — if L2 is the right terminology for the Payment layer. (#1497763)
Spark is fundamentally different.
Even @k00b acknowledge the trade-offs, telling Stackers to treat the embedded Spark wallet like a custodial wallet: "don't keep more money there than you can afford to lose, and don't use it if your financial-privacy requirements are high".
That raises an uncomfortable question:
If Stacker News be one of the very few places where Lightning itself powered the community, what happens when we replaces that simplicity with a fake L2s?
I understand the argument for onboarding. Newbies doesn't have to understand channels, liquidity, invoices and wallet configuration before they can experience Bitcoin. Even k00b make that case, describing trusted layers as a temporary “toehold” while we build better paths to individual sovereignty.
But there is a danger in the shortcut becoming the destination.
Stacker News shouldn't became another platform where we merely interact with Bitcoin through someone else's rails.
It should remain a place where people actually use Bitcoin.
So perhaps this is the death of the old Stacker News.
And perhaps that's okay.
Stacker News is dead.
Long live Stacker News.
Hopefully, the community will experiment, question the trade-offs, reject what doesn't serve Bitcoin, and eventually leave Spark behind and go back to the original Lightning-native options.
Because the goal was never simply to make Bitcoin easier.
The goal was to make Bitcoin freer. ⚡️
