I started three books this week and abandoned all of them after just a few pages. Two of them were recommendations from a friend, but they were so boring and just not good at all. I definitely won't be taking her book suggestions anymore!
How about you? Are you a stubborn reader who pushes through to the very end even when a book is boring and you're not enjoying it? Or are you like me, someone who drops it halfway and moves on to the next one, knowing that life is too short and there are countless books out there to read?
heeeell no! who does that??
Bad books aren't worth your time... When you realise your error, cut them lose
agree
Agree too, but I would generally give it at least a few chapters to show its worth instead of just few pages
The two books I remember starting and not finishing are The Silmarillion and Catch 22.
I soldiered through Catch 22 in 2019 just because of its reputation as a classic. Didn’t enjoy it at all.
Never thought about this before but it might have been preordained since with all its nonsense it was prepping me to covid times without me understanding it at the time.
I'm glad it paid off for you. Another book I recall putting down shortly after starting was On Liberty.
Like Catch 22, it should have appealed to me but I just found it boring. I suspect the issue is that I had already imbibed many of the central ideas/themes, so the remaining text didn't grab me.
I wasn't one to stop reading books; I always finished them, even if they were terrible. I must have some kind of mental problem, I don't know, something undiagnosed, hahaha.
But, for the last three years or so, I've also become very picky about choosing which books to read. I value my time much more now, so I always look for good reviews, comments, etc., before sitting down to read a book (I can't stand reading on a computer or tablet).
It depends on my mood actually. Sometimes I give up when a better book comes along. Other times I am oddly determined to finish it just because I want to say I did. But I scan rapidly through the pages lar
Yeah I feel like some day I will circle back and finish it.
Here is the list I keep of unfinished books
I think I might start the beginning of infinity over again. The book is so dense I have a hard time following the concepts
Mostly or i nake ut a mission to chip at each day
Always consider who is suggesting a book. I am sure you know whether some of your friends have good taste or not... Frankly, if a book can't hold my attention in the first 10 pages, I am out.
I used to read... But now a days we can just summarize the whole book by using AI and just read the important points and summary of the whole story. AI can save us a lot of times as well in reading a books.
I used to force myself to finish every book. Now I focus on extracting the key ideas as quickly as possible and only go deep when the content proves valuable. That mindset is actually one of the reasons I started building tools around content understanding and summarization.
