I've been listening to the new Bitcoin Podcast recently with Alex McShane, and he said that he likes Nostr, but scrolling is boring. I thought that's exactly what we need — boring scrolling. That's the reason I left other social media in the first place — addictive scrolling.
People forgot that when Instagram appeared, there were only pictures from your friends, and as your friends’ pictures were updated once every several days, maybe once a day at best, it was very nice to just catch up with what your friends were doing and how they were going on with their lives, especially if you did not meet them on a daily basis. When I left Instagram, my friends were hardly posting at all; it was mostly status updates, ads, algorithms. I was no longer following people I knew, but being fed by the algorithms the pictures I would like. When they introduced Reels and it became doomscrolling, I finally pressed the delete button.
You cannot really doomscroll Nostr; there is no endless video feed, and it's a good thing.
Nostr should be boring, so you can read the news, engage in a couple of zaps of the funny memes, and go on with your life — and your life is supposed to be fun.
Most people now have fun scrolling — boring life. It was normalized, and it's sad, so we need to keep Nostr boring — to have a fun life again.
Keep Nostr boring. It's supposed to be this way.

Don't know if boring is the right word. If something is boring, don't do it!
At the moment nostr is still quite small and very bitcoin focused. I've been enjoying it more as of late and it seems to be growing or just getting better.
I think you'll be able to curate it better as it grows. If all you want to see are your friends posts, just follow those people. If you're only interested in a particular topic just follow the hash tag.

“boring” is a quote from McShane. I think it’s “boring” only in comparison to the 15-second videos playing in infinite loops on other apps. People are becoming so addicted to this kind of constant brain stimulation that they can’t even read anything longer than a single sentence. But we can make boring great again=)

Is there nothing between boring and addictive?
Is SN boring, and that's why you are here?
I feel like your post is missing a lot of nuances, which made it pretty boring to read.

What I’m saying is that people come to Nostr and complain that it’s not engaging enough because you can’t just scroll endlessly. But to me, that’s a feature — we should be spending as little time scrolling as possible.

Ok your meme is good

Did they really say “It’s not engaging enough because you can’t just scroll endlessly” or is that just what you heard when they said “Nostr is boring”?

This is just my interpretation of his words, he only said "scrolling is boring" and I though why would anyone think it's boring? only if they compare it to doomscrolling videos on instagram / tiktok

You can build a relay by topics or private for your friends or members too. Nostr give us so many possibilities that makes it sounds boring when you can’t see the edge.

I like the framing!
It's tough I think though for people who are building businesses based on nostr: clients, other nostr tools. If you can get 100 users with a boring client that just does some one or two basic things, you might try to think of new features for your ap so that you can attract 200 users. And then pretty soon you have today's Instagram.
How to incentivize app creators to want to create boring experiences?
reply
By zapping them =) You can also pay for Damus Purple or Primal Premium or simial things on other apps. I think Nostr app creators aren’t incentivized to keep you in the app for as long as possible, because they don’t sell ads (at least for now?) How much people will pay for a healthy social app experience?

I completely agree with this statement. Nostr helps you escape the prison that social media apps represent today. It's totally sickening how people are immersed in TIKTOK and all these apps that don't let you concentrate, changing topics every 30 or 60 seconds. It's even scary how people spend their days on them, while they eat, work, or simply walk, their only action is to swipe the screen over and over again.

Agree with you on the scrolling part but I find Nostr boring due to the low value content most days. That said, its a solvable problem. I find SN far better of an experience but SN is not Nostr. Its just a web site.

I've been able to find some pretty good accounts.
I've also had to unfollow a couple folks who got further into the rabbit hole than I'm interested in following.
Yeah, Nostr an be boring, but I almost prefer it that way. I'm inviting my artist friends whenever they listen, and any ladies that I think would be able to hang in the environment.
I point them at https://nostr.how and get a pretty decent response on that... "oh, I didn't know all this about NOSTR!"
seriously, I talk about this stuff enough, you should have absorbed it... but it's fine that I'm not listened to.

Nostr is much more than a social feed. It's the most known use case, but it wasn't invented to compete with social media. Have a look into this talk I gave at Bitcoin Conference Ireland this year, you'll see that Nostr is more of an identity protocol for the internet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=02l1vZWEgjI&list=PLrWmNjlKQ7qj8BvFpvqfSwOoDsouiplm2&index=13

I've been thinking that it would be amusing to setup a RageBait bot on NOSTR, that harvested the most potent ragebait from X, and posted it on NOSTR. It would probably generate a ton of traffic. 😅

and your life is supposed to be fun.
I think this is the point, try to live your life

This depends on the client you are using. I prefer not to use any AI and Something feed because it becomes another X/facebook shit and Nostr allows much more than that. It's not boring without these things, it's normal to think that when they are trained to have their attention captured by feeds full of nonsense paying with their time and attention.
